Coronavirus Has Now Killed More People in US than 2018-2019 Flu Season

COVID-19 has now killed more people than influenza did during the 2018-2019 flu season in the United States.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 34,200 people died last year during flu season. According to numbers tabulated by Worldometer, 39,651 people have died of the coronavirus at this article's time of writing.

The rate of death for people with COVID-19 compared to the flu is also stark. According to the CDC, 35.5 million people likely got the flu last year. That is a death rate of only .1%.

Coronavirus has infected, at least, 742,459 people in the United States. That means it has a death rate of over 5%, which is more than 50 times the flu if its current death rate holds.

For months, the President has been downplaying COVID-19, its impact on the United States, and its seriousness as a virus. In February, President Trump claimed that people in the United States with the coronavirus were "getting better."

The same month, Mr. Trump stated, "When you have 15 people [with coronavirus], and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that’s a pretty good job we’ve done."

In March, the President further downplayed the coronavirus, telling people to "think about" the fact that the flu killed so many people:

Now, unfortunately, it appears that coronavirus will kill tens of thousands more people than the flu did last year. In 2017-2018, the flu killed approximately 61,000, the highest in the 2010s, and a number that the coronavirus will likely eclipse in May.

  1. Why are you retards comparing this to the flu, is not the same completely different illnesses, this why people are getting confused and misinformed.

  3. Well as reported by the AP and according to the cdc, 80,000 peopled died from the flu in 2017/18 so looks like the covid 19 has a ways to go to catch up to the flu. Funny I don't remember the government shutting down in 17/18. https://www.statnews.com/2018/09/26/cdc-us-flu-deaths-winter/

    1. Imagine if states/cities had NOT shut down for Covid 19. As the article says, Covid 19 has a 5% death rate in the US compared to .1% for the flu. That means even if only 25% of people in the US got it, there would be over 4 million deaths. Influenza viruses are more predictable in who they will affect and the death rate. Covid 19 is a novel virus, meaning it's not as well known how it works, which is why it's been important to take more extreme precautions while figuring it out. Please understand that deaths for Covid are lower than the 17/18 flu season as a direct result of shutting things down.

    2. 5% has to be inflated. If only the most serious cases get tested, the death rate will look much higher than it actually is.

    3. 2017-2018 was a particularly deadly year. More than double what was considered to be a normal "bad year." The 2018-2019 numbers are more in line with what we normally see with the flu. So yes, covid is more deadly than the flu.

    4. First, we're at 40,000 deaths since March 22. Not over the course of a year, over the course of 28 days. And this was after the majority of the country underwent heavy social distancing. As far as totals go, say the rate of spread slows down to a quarter of what it is now (about 2000 deaths daily over to 500 deaths daily). If it stays at that level for the rest of the year, more than 100,000 more people will die, nearly doubling the death toll of the 17/18 flu.
Second, the virus is highly contagious, even when a person is completely asymptomatic. It has no vaccine, and we're still finding out how exactly it affects the body. So we've got a disease with no proven treatment that no doctor in the world has more than a few months of experience with, and that can make people contagious without them knowing. If a healthcare worker is asymptomatic, they can spread the virus to their patients many of whom are at much higher risk of death from the coronavirus.
Third, and the way people ignore this point baffles me, doctors and epidemiologists around the world (you know, the folks who have spent their lives studying and deal with this sort of thing) very much think this is worse than the flu. No, not Dr. Phil. Real doctors, who are actually allowed to practice.

    6. 5% is inflated for 2 reasons.

      1) yes.. The number of tests are low compared to the number of infected people. Mathematicians believe the current leveling seen on the US numbers isn't due to cases, rather the number of tests limiting the ability to capture them.

      And

      2) hospital overload. People who are treated die at a lower rate than those who are not. Which which why Germany and Italy have comparible case numbers, but widely different death numbers. The NYC hospital system is overwhelmed.

  5. An average of 34,000 die from the flu every year. It was 34,000 last year and 61,000 a year before. We will have to look back at the number of people that died from terminal viral infective pneumonia in about six or eight months and see what the number is. Statistics are almost nonexistent at the moment that show how many people died or did not die from Covid or influenza. let’s take an average of 45,000. If anywhere between 25 and 60,000 die in the 2019 – 20 season it would mean that things are just normal. If more than that die, we might figure Covid and had something to do with it. If not, all this show is for nothing. All this hot air about 50 million people dying is just that hot air. However, the damage to the economy would be very easy to quantitate. And this has very real repercussions on the average person in on this planet.

    1. >45,000

We are already at nearly 45,000 JUST from COVID, the flu will kill tens of thousands more, we are at 24,000-62,000 deaths so far from the flu for a combined massive toll and neither flu season nor COVID are anywhere near over.

COVID is not comparable to the flu, it has to be combated by containment, look at NY, New York had 4750 deaths from the flu and pneumonia in 2018 (which was a bad year), 17,671 have died in New York from COVID already and that is with containment put in place, unrestricted would be complete devastation.

  6. I have capitalize the parts that I think are important in that sentence. Jordan, I’m sure you realize that rate is not 5%. We can measure the deaths but not the infected proportion of the population so death rates are impossible to figure. It probably is in the area of .1 to.2, but neither I, you or the author of that article is able to give us a correct figure. So, let us wait and see how many deaths from pneumonia as there is an the end of the year and then we can all start the endless posturing of what if we had done this what if we had done that etc.

    2. Yes it is because the vast majority of COVID cases are asymptomatic and never get tested and the people go about their life as normal. If you take deaths as a percentage of those tested the death rate could appear to be 20 fold higher than the true death rate. Use your damn common sense.

  7. It’s the hospitalization rates that will overwhelm our health care system which does not happen with the flu. All these numbers have mostly been the last 2 months alone. No comparison. 9. Among many points lost here is that the 2019-20 influenze is still happening with all its associated deaths. The official season runs through May. Covid-19 may observe no season at all and just keep going until we have a vaccine, so all Covid-19 deaths are IN ADDITION TO all the infuenza deaths. To boot, they've happened in a much shorter time frame (so far). Our health care system was already at near full capacity with influenza. A totally novel fatal disease could well break it. There will be no economy if your injured worker from a construction site accident or your family member in a car crash dies because there are no functioning hospitals. Lasly, many of these deaths have been at an ICU -level or care before they died, so each of them represents $40k or more in hospital costs. That gets paid out of somewhere, whether in increased insurance premiums next year or a shortfall in Medicare or in red ink in the hospitals' budgets. So, just multiply $40k by 40k people, consider that it's only ~1.5 month, and extrapolate that (multiply by 8) and you'll see that this is not a trivial matter but something that literally spills right over the edge of the healthcare system's already full plate.

  11. Don't forget we've had a flu vaccine since the 1940s, 150+million doses distributed in the US last year. The death rate would be much much higher without it. This comparison doesn't mean anything.

  20. People, we need to wake up -- the coronavirus pandemic is a fraud, an invisible, all-purpose enemy to which the government can assign any properties it wants to frighten and control us.

The international corporate elite that runs things behind the scenes has turned an illness no more dangerous than the common flu into a pretext for an enormous expansion of government power and an enormous transfer of resources from the citizens to the corporate elite.

We are being lied to every step of the way -- just look at the numerous videos of empty hospitals in the alleged “epicenters” of the pandemic.

There is no legitimacy to any of this. The masks, the “social distancing”, the “self-isolation”, the restrictions on assemblies and groups, the shutdowns, the lockdowns -- none of that is to keep us safe, but all of it is to condition us to accept mandatory vaccination, more government control, more regimentation, and more handouts to the corporate elite.

Some may ask, “But would the government really lie about this? Would the news media really lie about this?” I ask -- are you serious? Do you really think that politicians, high-level government employees, and the news media tell the truth?

Too many of us believe -- despite so much historical and contemporary evidence to the contrary -- that the government and the corporate media do not lie, especially about the big things. In reality, the government and the corporate media lie about everything -- especially about the big things.

  21. I agree!

If the corona virus roughly triples the number it kills, it will be about equal to the number of dead from the regular 2018 flu season, and no one even thought about shutting down even one Quick Trip store then. This is about gaining a firm control over the country and it's citizens, who had the temerity to elect someone that the elite didn't approve of.

This is every government's solution to deal with under funded social services

We are tanking our economy and jobs for a death rate of .6 and this rate considers those not showing symptoms but positive. Yes its more infectious than the flu which does make it more severe but tanking jobs and economy when all we need fo do is social distance, wash hands and wear mask until proven therapy or vax is available. Far more deaths will occur from a depression or recession
